The origin of the NCS ALUMNI Association began in November 1, 2018 through the efforts of Marenda Henderson and her family who was a former student of the school and her mother was a teacher at NCS. The organization was initially called the Normandie Christian School Alumni Association and filed in California.
While serving on the NCS Board of Directors Darin Hudson’83 was present during the recorded minutes meeting where it was pointed out during a fundraising discussion that NCS has no alumni organization or any other organization that has any connection to any alumni. The discussion quietly stayed with Darin weeks after the meeting was adjourned and he began to discuss with other NCS students and former NCS Board of Directors presidents about the need for such an organization to serve NCS. In April of 2019 after serving on the board of directors for NCS since 2012, Darin resigned from his position on the board citing a desire to spend more time with his daughter and to improve the relations between the school and the alumni community at large.
He began his efforts in reaching out to and finding other NCS alumni and posting old NCS photos and stories through social media via Facebook/Meta and began working with Maisha Cannon ‘94 who had previously formed an NCS Alumni, Teachers and Staff page on September 13, 2008. After his resignation he began to exclusively work behind the scenes to find other NCS alumni and invite them to join the group page. Soon the group began to expand and grow from 120 members to over 400 members by 2024. His efforts did not go unnoticed by many of the other alumni and Maisha then elevated his group member status from member to fellow Group Administrator. Soon after he began working on organizing in 2011 the first NCS All Class Reunion held at the school in the summer of 2011.
The organization name was researched by Darin Hudson ‘83 using the 5 point name check method and upon finding a match for the name reached out to one of the Henderson daughters of the organization and inquired about their intent to continue to utilize this legal entity in the future—to avoid any further confusion or potential conflict. He was informed that they planned to shutter the legal entity in its current state and not renew their filing. This led to a renaming of the currently constituted legal entity as the NCS Alumni Association using the abbreviated name of the school instead of the proper name designation of the school.
The current organization incorporated in 2024, serves the alumni and current students through its tax-exempt corporation. Other NCS alumni who joined in the organizational development process included Tylana Bird-Hill who served as the first treasurer of the group. Mia (Dorton) Joseph ‘83 was added as the first event director to help with the reunion and entertainment for the group. Joelle K. Labbe ‘82 was added as a secondary event planner with her skills and experience as a travel planner; she became responsible for the groups hotel business and travel management schedule.
Other notable NCS alumni were financially successful in helping to form the organization and help with the 2024 reunion costs. The Honorable Judge LaTonya (Hadnot) Prileou ‘82 provided to the organization the entire deposit amount needed for the Carson Community Center event for the gala on August 24th and the first secretary in NCS history Willie Helen Thomas loaned the organization the amount needed to file the legal fees for the formation of the new legal entity in memory of her deceased sister Charlie Faye Hudson who worked for NCS for over three decades.
The formation of the organization was officially announced at the end of service by the request of Minister Dr. Tyrone Talbert at the Normandie church on Sunday March 24, 2024 by Darin E. Hudson ‘83 with Berniece Pitts the widow of school founder Carroll Pitts, Jr in attendance.
